April 2025 Dreamletter
In this edition…
Volunteer Power!
April is Global Volunteer Appreciation Month and this is National Volunteer Appreciation Week. It's hard to express how greatly and deeply we appreciate the phenomenal volunteers of "I Have A Dream" Foundation of Boulder County. They/you make IHDF the amazing organization it is!
Our volunteers humbly live out the powerful virtues that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. envisioned when he said...
"Everybody can be great...because anybody can serve...You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love."
Already in 2025, over 100 volunteers have given hundreds of hours of time and invested immense talents. Volunteers' effort and energy support the students, families, and programs of IHDF.
Learning Partners, Mentors, event volunteers, Board members, Parent Advisory Board members, and Community Program Partners—each has played a role in creating opportunities for young people in our community. And a special shout out to our AmeriCorps volunteers! If you've had any connection with the work that goes on at our sites, you know that our phenomenal AmeriCorps members are a huge part of "making the Dream work"! (Unfortunately, AmericCorps program funding may be at risk... see more below.)
These volunteers serve in many ways, including partnering directly with Dreamer Scholars of all ages, providing STEAM programming, coaching sports and robotics, developing and evaluating curriculum, raising funds, sharing career insights, applying skills such as photography and computer expertise, supporting events.
Our volunteers build long-term relationships that make a difference. Their dedication strengthens our programs and empowers students to succeed in school, post-secondary education, and their careers.
On behalf of our staff and families, please accept our tremendous gratitude!
Perla Delgado, Ph.D. | CEO/Executive Director
AmeriCorps Funding at Risk
For over two decades, AmeriCorps members have been an integral part of "I Have A Dream" of Boulder County–it is no exaggeration to say that we would not be who we are today were it not for AmeriCorps. It is impossible to quantify the breadth and depth of the contributions that Americorps volunteers (affectionately known as "ACs" around here) to the lives of our Scholars, families, staff and community.
Recent government cuts to the AmeriCorps program raise serious concerns as to what is ahead for AmeriCorps in general and, at some point, could have dramatic effects for IHDF, our work and our Scholars.
If you have been involved with or appreciated AmeriCorps and want to see their work with us continue, please make your voice heard! Click below to find out how.
The following is an excerpt of a recent email from the Director of Programs and Operations of Notre Dame Mission Volunteers, our principal partner and connection to the Americorps program. Read on for updates and several ways you can advocate.
...You may already be aware that NDMV leadership is closely monitoring a deeply concerning situation that may jeopardize the current and future operation of AmeriCorps. While we wish we had clearer answers, things are unfolding in real time—even for us—and we want to keep you informed and united with us as partners through this moment.
Most importantly: your partnership means everything right now. The work we do together has never been more critical. Thank you for standing with your NDMV members and with us as we navigate this unprecedented situation.
What We Know So Far:
-
Last week, representatives from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) visited the AmeriCorps national agency.
-
That led to developments on Tuesday, April 15, in which all AmeriCorps members in the National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) were released early from service under CPC (Compelling Personal Circumstances).
-
Wednesday evening, reports emerged that 85% of AmeriCorps staff were placed on administrative leave, leaving just 100 staff nationwide to oversee programs.
-
Despite these staffing reductions, there is no official indication at this time that AmeriCorps State and National (including NDMV), VISTA, or other grant-funded programs are paused or being dissolved. That said, we have no guarantees how DOGE will proceed with this continued agency-wide review.
-
There is a great deal of misinformation being spread. If you hear anything or have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your Site Manager or NDMV Leadership directly. We will do our best to address any questions.
We understand how unsettling this is. While the NDMV service year remains active and unaffected at this time, we are monitoring the situation hourly and remain in contact with key partners at the agency as well as Voices for National Service. Please reach out to your Site Manager or NDMV Leadership if you hear conflicting information or have concerns—we’re here and doing our best to sort fact from rumor.
What We Need Most Right Now: Your Advocacy
Since your site has seen the impact of NDMV members, now is the time to speak up for them—and for the future of national service. Here’s how you can help:
- Call your U.S. Senators.
- Start with your state, then consider reaching out to states where NDMV members serve.
- Colorado Michael Bennet https://www.bennet.senate.gov/ (202) 224-5852
- Colorado John Hickenlooper https://www.hickenlooper.senate.gov/ (202) 224-5941
- This sample call script can help guide your message.
- Start with your state, then consider reaching out to states where NDMV members serve.
- Email your lawmakers using the Voices for National Service Link.
- Engage on social media.
- Leverage personal connections.
- If you or someone in your network has a relationship with a state or federal legislator, please reach out—or connect them with us. We’re happy to help guide the conversation.
This is not an easy moment, but we remain grounded in the deep truth we all know: service works. It transforms communities, changes lives, and builds a better future. Thank you for continuing to be part of that work—and for being the kind of partners we can count on when it matters most.

Our first Spring Festival was a blast! About 150 IHDF Scholars, families and community members had lots of fun with the robotics and science activities brought by CU Engineering, Groundworks Art Labs' clay station. Face painting and the bubble cannon were huge hits! Families also took advantage of free dental screenings provided by South Boulder Pediatric Dentistry and connected with A Way Forward and Latina Strong. Tacos Ay Ay Ay! provided delicious food.
It was great to introduce folks to our Community Center and we are grateful, as always, to AMD and the Medtronic Foundation for their investment in the Community Center!
OUR THANKS...

Heart of Longmont Church
The generous congregation of Heart of Longmont United Methodist Congregation made "I Have A Dream" Foundation of Boulder County their focus for support of a community nonprofit organization in February and sent us a wonderful donation to support our programming. We are glad to be connected to such a great congregation in Longmont!
The committed, knowledgeable, encouraging, faithful, intentional volunteers across all our sites make invaluable contributions to the lives of "I Have A Dream" Scholars every day at all of our sites. We cannot do this without you...and we don't want to!! This month we want highlight one great volunteer among many...
Emily Guerrero
From the moment Emily Guerrero signed up as a Learning Partner working with Dreamer scholars at Frederick High School, she has been more than a math tutor—she has been a mentor, advocate, and champion for student success.
Over the course of this school year Emily has built strong connections with our cohort, supporting them in Algebra 2 and fostering a belief in their ability to succeed. Emily’s commitment to education goes beyond simply teaching equations and formulas. She has actively shaped our program, consistently providing insightful feedback to enhance its effectiveness and scheduling. She understands that learning is not one-size-fits-all and has worked to offer students additional practice, increased rigor, and the confidence to persevere through challenges by adapting to their learning styles. Because of Emily, students who once doubted their abilities now see themselves as more capable problem-solvers, and have had a chance to take ownership of their education.
Her patience, encouragement, and ability to break down complex concepts have transformed the way our students approach math, instilling resilience and a growth mindset. Emily embodies the mission of "I Have A Dream" by ensuring that every student she works with has the tools, support, and belief needed to reach their full potential. Her impact is not just measured in improved grades but in the lasting confidence she instills in her student partners. She goes beyond the scope of her role, and for that, we are deeply grateful!
We're excited to have a growing partnership with South Boulder Pediatric Dentistry! Dr. Sam and her team have been to several of our sites, presenting on topics from oral health to careers in dentistry. They were also a key part of our Spring Festival/resource fair, offering free dental/oral screenings. We appreciate your heart, availability and thoughtful engagement!

Your Support is as Critical as Ever!
Our programming and the relational community created by "I Have A Dream" Foundation are constant and consistent sources of growth and encouragement for our Scholars and their families. Unfortunately, current events point toward funding instability.
Your support of our general operating budget that funds programming for students and families, our highly effective staff and many scholarships can help us maintain our commitments to these Scholars.
Here are two options to consider...
- Become a monthly donor. You can lead the way by creating stabile programming that helps our students thrive. Your consistent support allows us to focus on what matters most: being there for our students, every single day.
- Make a donation today. Every donation helps ensure that our work continues.
