“Thinking about my future helps me stay motivated.” / “Pensar en mi futuro me ayuda a mantenerme motivada”.
Cuando le preguntamos por qué decidió participar en el programa de pasantías “I Have A Dream” de larga data, Patti dijo: “quiero generar un impacto y ayudar a que mi comunidad crezca”. Sus metas profesionales son la de convertirse en maestra para estudiantes más jóvenes o ser enfermera pediátrica; esta experiencia laboral la ayudó a acercarse a esas metas.El programa de pasantías de verano “I Have A Dream” coloca a Dreamer Scholars en puestos en organizaciones locales y agencias gubernamentales. El programa es una pasantía de seis a ocho semanas, 20 horas a la semana para ayudar a los estudiantes a fortalecer sus habilidades para poder competir y tener éxito en el mercado laboral, a la vez que se les paga por su trabajo. La pandemia hizo que este programa fuera aún más desafiante, ya que los estudiantes no podían realizar prácticas en persona; pero eso no impidió que Patti buscara la oportunidad de desarrollar sus habilidades y experiencia.Mientras estuvo en WOW!, Patti se centró particularmente en superar las barreras del idioma para estudiantes y familias. No pasó mucho tiempo durante su pasantía en el Museo para que se diera cuenta de que no había mucha diversidad en los servicios que se ofrecían. Patti es bilingüe y quería que el trabajo que estaba haciendo fuera accesible para los participantes de habla hispana. A través de su proyecto durante la hora del cuento en el Museo, hizo videos en los que leía libros infantiles en español.Cuando le preguntamos a Patti qué contribuciones ha hecho a su comunidad, hizo una pausa y se tomó un tiempo para pensar antes de responder. “Eso es realmente difícil porque no pienso en eso, simplemente lo hago”, compartió. “Yo diría que hay que dar más oportunidades a los hispanohablantes. Todo lo que hago, trato de hacerlo en español o de traducirlo para que otros también puedan entenderlo. Para mí, la comunidad significa un espacio diverso donde todos están felices y se sienten incluidos ”.
Además de hacer una pasantía y mantenerse al día con su trabajo escolar virtual, actualmente Patti está trabajando duro para enviar solicitudes de becas y aplicaciones a las universidades. Su objetivo es ser aceptada en la Universidad del Norte de Colorado para poder estudiar educación o medicina. Aunque su futura carrera es una gran motivación, Patti está motivada en hacer la diferencia. En sus propias palabras: “Me gusta mucho ayudar a otras personas y fortalecer sus habilidades”. Ella está agradecida con la Fundación “I Have A Dream” por las oportunidades que le han brindado y que le han ayudado a aclarar sus metas profesionales y la oportunidad de realizar un trabajo significativo e importante.

“Thinking about my future helps me stay motivated,” shares Patti, a Broadway East Dreamer Scholar in her senior year at Boulder High School. Indeed, her future is bright and she is working hard to achieve her dreams of making an impact on her community. Patti is a person that others describe as “happy,” “creative,” and “positive.” Over the summer, she completed her first internship with the Boulder Public Library and most recently, she completed another internship with the WOW! Children’s Museum.
When asked why she decided to participate in the longstanding “I Have A Dream” Internship Program, Patti shared, “I want to make an impact and help my community grow.” Her career goals are to become either a teacher for younger students or a pediatric nurse, and this work experience helped her get closer to those goals.
The “I Have A Dream” Summer Internship Program places Dreamer Scholars in positions at local organizations and government agencies. The program is a six-to eight-week, 20 hour a week internship to help students strengthen their skills to be able to compete and succeed in the job market, while still being paid for their work. The pandemic made this program more challenging, as students couldn’t intern in-person; but that didn’t stop Patti from pursuing the opportunity to grow her skills and experience.
While at WOW!, Patti focused in particular on bridging language barriers for students and families. It didn’t take her long into her time at the Museum to notice that there was not a lot of diversity in the services being offered. Patti is bilingual, and she wanted the work she was doing to be accessible for Spanish-speaking participants. Through her story time project at the Museum, she made videos in which she read children’s books in Spanish.
When we asked Patti what contributions she’s made to her community, she paused and took time to think before responding. “That’s really hard because I don’t think about it—I just do it,” she shared. “I would say giving Spanish speakers more opportunities. Everything I do, I try to do it in Spanish or translate it so others can understand, too. Community to me means a diverse space where everyone is happy and feels included.”
Alongside interning and keeping up with her virtual schoolwork, Patti is currently working hard to submit college and scholarship applications. Her goal is to be accepted to the University of Northern Colorado so she can study either teaching or medicine. Although her future career is a strong motivator, Patti is motivated by making a difference. In her own words: “I really like helping other people and making their skills stronger.” She is grateful to “I Have A Dream” for providing her with opportunities that help clarify her career goals, and give her the chance to do meaningful, important work.
