2025 | Janet Dilz

Each year, we recognize one volunteer whose compassion, consistency, and belief in our Dreamer Scholars truly stands out. This year, we are proud to present the 2025 Lori Canova Leadership and Recognition Award to Janet Dilz.

Janet began mentoring with IHDF in 2019 and has been a steady, joyful presence ever since—through in-person mentoring, pandemic-era virtual support in both academics and emotional well-being and, most recently, as a Learning Partner with both the Oak and Diagonal Court cohorts.

She’s deeply appreciated by students and staff alike, known for her warmth, insight, and consistent dedication. Students who worked with her didn’t just improve academically—they gained confidence, trust, and a supporter who always showed up.

Even after the Oak cohort graduated, Janet chose to continue her involvement, joining our Diagonal Court site this fall alongside several fellow volunteers.

As she puts it:

I’ve just enjoyed it too much to walk away! Working with these kids has brought me so much joy and a real sense of purpose. What started as a short-term commitment quickly became something I genuinely looked forward to each week. The connections, the laughs, the little moments of progress—it’s hard to imagine not being part of it. So I’ve just kept showing up!

Thank you, Janet, for the joy and purpose you bring to our community. We are so lucky to have you!

2024 | Marie Vicek

In 2024, we proudly honored Marie Vicek for her extraordinary dedication, creativity, and compassion as a mentor. Since November 2018, Marie has been a steady and inspiring presence in the life of her mentee, Odalis (“Odi”), in the Elk Cohort. Meeting regularly and staying closely connected with “I Have A Dream” Foundation staff, Marie consistently demonstrates her deep commitment to Odi’s growth and well-being.

Marie brings creativity to every interaction. Even during the pandemic, she kept their connection strong through virtual activities like baking cupcakes, making dream catchers, and creating popcorn chains. In person, their time together has included theater outings, hiking, arts and crafts, and exploring new restaurants. One especially meaningful moment was when Marie supported Odi in launching a dog-watching business at age 12, guiding her through marketing, customer communication, and balancing school with entrepreneurship.

Now a high school student, Odi has grown into a confident, responsible young person involved in theater and other activities. Marie has helped create a safe, encouraging space for Odi to try new things, build confidence, and discover her potential.

Through her consistency, imagination, and heartfelt care, Marie exemplifies the true spirit of mentorship. It is with great pride that we honor Marie Vicek with the Lori Canova Leadership and Recognition Outstanding Volunteer of the Year Award. Congratulations, Marie, and thank you for the lasting difference you make in Odi’s life and in our community.

2023 | Linsey Layman

Linsey Layman is a truly deserving recipient of the 2023 “Outstanding Volunteer of the Year” award. For nearly two decades, she has demonstrated unwavering dedication to mentoring and to the powerful, reciprocal impact of meaningful relationships.

Linsey met her mentee, Naydelin, at the Longmont Library when Naydelin was in fourth grade. What began as a simple connection quickly grew into a lasting bond built through shared experiences—art walks, ballet performances, theater outings, and, of course, Dairy Queen trips. Linsey played an important role in helping Naydelin feel at home in Longmont while nurturing her love of learning and the arts.

One of Linsey’s greatest joys has been watching Naydelin’s connection with her family grow. Inspired by Naydelin’s strong sense of responsibility, Linsey has shared her love of reading by gifting books that now form a small family library, with Naydelin reading to her younger siblings. Linsey credits Naydelin with teaching her to be more open, adaptable, and intentional about listening.

Linsey’s commitment has never wavered. She continually adapts her role to support Naydelin’s evolving interests, whether helping arrange swimming lessons or simply showing up as a steady presence. By meeting Naydelin where she is and valuing her voice, Linsey exemplifies what true mentorship looks like.

Through her consistency, compassion, and humility, Linsey has made a lasting difference in Naydelin’s life—and in her own. Her dedication and impact make her an outstanding volunteer and a most deserving honoree.
