The Power of Comprehensive, Long-Term Engagement

Our program's strength lies in recognizing that preparation alone isn't enough—students need ongoing support as they navigate the complex landscape of higher education. The student voices we've shared demonstrate the transformative impact of programs that provide not just college preparation, but continued mentorship, financial support, and community connection throughout their postsecondary journey. When students describe graduating "debt-free," building "lifelong friendships," and gaining confidence as "women in STEM" or future social workers, they're illustrating how comprehensive support addresses the multiple barriers that cause so many of their peers to leave college.

By investing in programs that engage students from preparation through graduation, we're not just changing individual lives—we're building pathways that can transform entire communities and break generational cycles of educational inequity.

What are undergrads telling us about life in college and postsecondary programs?

As "I Have A Dream" Scholars move into postsecondary education programs, such as four-year undergrad, community college, professional or specialized training programs, our Postsecondary Department stays in touch and continues to walk alongside them. We do regular check-ins and provide personalized support...so they tell us what they are thinking and how they are doing.

The following is a sample of what students told us in their recent check-ins.

We asked them to share highlights of their year in college and/or other programs...

Academic Success

“Through my college journey, I have experienced some highlights that make me so proud of my college performance. Recently I received an email where I was selected for the President's Honor Roll which is awarded for a good GPA (it is the third time). My GPA is also part of my highlights because I am close to graduating and if I keep my good grades, I might be able to graduate with a 3.9 GPA. I consider my GPA as a highlight because I feel that it convinces me of my capabilities, given that I was insecure when I started college because due to my English learning process, I thought I was not enough to be a college student. Lastly, a highlight of my college experience is the connections that I was able to build when I joined the social work program because I started sharing more classes with the same classmates and it influenced me to feel more comfortable.”

Building on a Passion

“Balancing work, school, and volunteering has been challenging but incredibly rewarding. Through my involvement with I Have A Dream and Family Connects in Boulder County, I’ve gained valuable skills and hands-on experience that have reinforced my passion for social work. These experiences have allowed me to support families, children, and individuals in need while also learning how to advocate for underserved communities.”

Culture & Travel

“Leading a student club where I had the opportunity to organize events that brought students together from diverse backgrounds, creating a sense of community and cultural exchange. Participating in internships that aligned with my career goals also stands out, as it allowed me to gain hands-on experience and build connections in my field. Another memorable moment was attending a career trek in New York, which provided me with invaluable insights into potential career paths and networking opportunities. These experiences have shaped both my personal growth and professional development, and I’m grateful for the support and resources provided by the school and its community.”

First-Generation & Giving Back

“It's possible that my college experience was unique. I am a first-generation student who has never lived in a dorm or had that ‘experience,’ but I am thankful that this scholarship allowed me to receive an education at no cost. We are fortunate to have been able to pursue higher education because our parents literally came here with nothing. Thank you to all of the donations. I hope to follow in your footsteps and support younger generations in the future so that our first-generation education rates continue to rise.”

Networking & International Travel

“Building a network and creating meaningful connections with like-minded individuals who want to be successful and great people. Getting to experience international travel through my school has also made it an experience I will never forget as I had never thought I would get the opportunity to visit Japan.”

Community & Gratitude

“I became a sister of Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority, Inc. this last Fall ‘24 semester! It’s been super amazing to join a multicultural community to have that support and also build that community up here in a predominantly white institution. It is thanks to our donors, volunteers, and IHDF staff that I have the opportunity to be here and experience this, so thank you very much for everything!”

Woman & First-Gen in STEM

“I have gained a lot of confidence as a woman, and first generation in a STEM field. I have finally felt like I belong in a science environment and it has been a very empowering experience.”

Connection & Study Abroad

“Having my friend Lexi as my roommate was so much fun; we would walk to 7-Eleven at 2 in the morning after studying all night for our tests or presentations—a moment I will cherish. Apart from being involved in school through a sorority, I have become more involved in El Centro, which was essentially made to support Latin/x communities at CSU. This has allowed me to feel more connected to my origin and connect with other people of color.

I was accepted into the Summer 2025 Hospitality in Thailand Abroad program. I am excited to have this opportunity. I have been trying to apply to as many scholarships as possible to make this happen. I am excited to announce this, and I can’t wait for all the fun memories and new experiences.”

Understanding & Justice

“One of the biggest highlights of my college experience has been the opportunity to explore the intersection of criminal justice, psychology, and sociology. Through my coursework, I've developed a deep understanding of how social structures shape us as humans and I think this has been really helpful for me as someone who wants to join the justice system field. Also, I have built many friendships who have helped me reach my goal!”

First-Gen, Social Work & Empowerment

“As a first-generation college student from a family that is still learning about the college process, I understand the challenges that many in my community face. My goal is to become a social worker who not only provides support and resources but also empowers others who, like me, are navigating systems that weren’t built with them in mind. I hope to give back to my community and help families who need guidance, assistance, and someone who truly understands and supports their journey and progress.”
